Why So Many Photos? |
|
The
goal of our website is to present multiple
views of each symbol for three reasons:
1) the lines are extremely difficult to
photograph due to lighting conditions and
the condition of the geoglyph itself,
2) to provide better context of
the symbol, showing some of its surrounding area,
and
3) because different views provide a
better understanding of the style of design
and perhaps a greater appreciation of the
genius of the constructors.

The Nazca Lizard is one of the
tragedies of the Nazca Plateau -
when the government of Peru decided
to build the Panamerican highway,
they paid little attention to these
irreplaceable geoglyphs and built
the highway right through the middle
of this symbol - cutting it in half.
That, and the permanent vehicle
marks, have damaged it beyond repair
and made the lizard very difficult
to see. This is a classic
example of why everyone must both
contribute to protecting the lines,
and pressure the government of Peru
to impose the harshest penalties on
those that destroy these remnants of
our distant past! |

The
Nazca llamas are anomalous geoglyphs
that don't quite fit and may be an
artifact of a previous (or later)
culture - the "B" is more consistent
with other Nazca geoglyph groups such as
the Monkey/Hands Group |

The runway fingers - from the runway at the left of the
condor's tail - they may be a previous symbol
overwritten by the runway (as elsewhere) |

This very strange organic shaped
geoglyph is located near the
condor's left wingtip. Were it
not for the fact that it conformed
to the unique Nazca design
characteristic: a continuous line;
it might we be disregarded.
But it does appear to utilize a
continuous line, but otherwise does
not conform to any design style
group common on the Nazca Plateau.
Was this the work of an apprentice?
or a practice design? |

A partial symbol on the left - connected to the spear
point/angle that goes underneath the arrow/shell symbol
- the shape appears organic, possibly part of a plant.
The upper (per the photo) part
appears consistent with the feet of
several bird figures, however,
clearly it does not form the shape
of a bird. |

Uniquely Nazca ... |
|
One of the extraordinary and unique features of the
geoglyphs of the greater Nazca region is
their approach to design. Many of
the geoglyphs are constructed using a
continuous line style: where a single
line forms the complete figure without
ever crossing itself. This has
lead many scientists to believe that
these symbols served a ceremonial
purpose - that the people of these
ancient cultures "walked" the lines to
perform some ritual - starting at a
point, then following the entire shape
of the symbol until its end. |

This geoglyph appears to have been
substantially destroyed by the
runway running over it - however, we
can see what appears to be the tail
of a bird at the top of the photo,
and the appearance of another part
in the lower part of the photo. |

Here are a pair of lobes or fingers near the Alcatraz's
head. They appear consistent with the Monkey/Hands
Group, but the full symbol appears to be eroded or
erased. |

A note about
image quality: images of lines and
symbols taken by air or from satellite
images are adjusted to improve contrast and
visibility of the artifact (line or symbol).
The results vary from image to image.
We apologize for the quality of some of the
images, but it is due to the original source
images, and the difficulty of
